The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) has officially launched its latest safety protocol, the ASEAN NCAP Protocol 2026-2030, on May 28, 2024. The launch event took place at King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB) in Bangkok, coinciding with the Vehicle Safety Course 2024/007 and the ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards 2024.
The newly launched ASEAN NCAP Protocol 2026-2030 sets forth comprehensive safety standards aimed at significantly reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries. By maintaining and enhancing four assessment pillars—Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), Safety Assist (SA), and Motorcyclist Safety (MS)—the protocol aims to create a safer driving environment for all road users.
Key Features and Enhancements of the ASEAN NCAP Protocol 2026-2030:
Enhanced Assessment Protocols: Revised and improved assessment protocols to meet the current and future challenges in road safety, i.e., application of star ratings, the assessment protocol for motorcyclist safety, and the test protocol for Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) cars to motorcyclists.
New Assessment Protocol-High Voltage Electric Vehicles: Introducing new assessment protocols for high voltage electric vehicles, addressing the unique safety challenges posed to electric vehicle models that have attracted high demand across Southeast Asia.
Advanced Safety Technologies: Increased scoring criteria for selected technologies, including Child Presence Detection (CPD), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) Inter-Urban, Lane Support, Auto High Beam/Adaptive Driving Beam, and AEB for Motorcycles.
Enhanced Child Occupant Protection (COP): Automotive manufacturers are encouraged to innovate and adopt advanced CPD technologies. The protocol introduces ASEAN Child Manikins (ASEAN-C6 & ASEAN-C10) to assess vehicle compatibility with available Child Restraint Systems (CRS). These manikins are crucial for ensuring more accurate and reliable safety testing for child passengers.
The launch of the ASEAN NCAP Protocol 2026-2030 represents a collaborative effort among various stakeholders, including government agencies, automotive manufacturers, and safety organizations. This collective initiative underscores ASEAN NCAP’s commitment to achieving safer vehicles and safer roads in Southeast Asia.
